Best place to rent a car for a weekend LA to Las Vegas?

Looking to rent a car to take from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Compact, gas efficient, simple and as cheap as I can do it. College student, 22 years, no tickets, accidents. Own a truck that gets 16 mpg. No bueno. Any help is greatly appreciated.
